In an answer to the “deceptively simple question, what is artificial intelligence?” Kate Crawford argues that AI is “neither artificial nor intelligent.”  How does she explain this?  Why does she think it is so it so important that we view view AI as an extractive industry?

Cobalt is fundamental to any digital future, particularly the development of “green” energy, smart grid technologies, and AI. How does this story compliment or complicate Crawford’s idea that we must always think of digital technologies are embodied, material, and expressions of power?
