Explain why teachers must be very cautious in labeling children. Use examples from the field and from your own experiences as a student.

Labeling a child can vary according to the parent, the teacher and the child.  In my understanding, Teachers labelling a child can have its advantages and disadvantages. It is important to have a balance with both in order to meet the needs of the child. Parents and teachers should work together in order for the child not to be labeled with a disabillity. The student may be made fun of for being labeled. This can create problems in making friends and can also cause bullying. Labeling a child with given needs as ADHA, disruptive, ODD, behavioral difficulties, mad, physically disabled among other labels is harmful and stigmatizing. The labels affect children negatively at the expense of seeing the strengths and capabilities of the child in another aspect (Plows, 2014).

Children who are labeled are looked at with certain expectations. Knowing a child’s special education label affects teacher expectations for that child (Hammer, P. (2012). Those children who are labeled might require additional help in modification or defferentiation instructions. The teacher can make it clear that her priority is to help the student and that the standard will not be lowered or the student will not be treated any different. At times labels can be used to get our students the services they might need. Labeling students emotionally impacts on the hope that students have towards success.

From my experience during my field experience in an ICT classroom. Teachers label children that are ELL with disabilities. Some ELL students are capable of doinf most of the work the only thing the have difficulties expressing themselves. I believe teachers should take their time teachng the students that are ELL with learning disabilities. In my 3k classroom I have a girl who is not able to communicate like a child who is 4 yrs old would. She understands when you talk to her and follows rules. She might say the most three words to you but not have a conversation with you. She can say her numbers, colors and alphabets. If a story is read she is not able to grasp the story in order to tell you what it is about. She has been provided services with a special education teacher who came 3 days a week for an hour. However everyone agreed that she needs speech therapy and a school who specialises in that. She will be going into Pre K in september so hopefully she will get the help she needs.
