3.4 Assignment. Journal – Storytelling Techniques
Getting Started
As you may recall from PSY 520, TED talks are designed to inform listeners about an idea or topic that is important and to inspire them toward action. As you begin thinking about the TED-style talk, audio podcast, or multimedia communication tool, you will present in your final capstone course in your specialization track, you want that to be your two-fold plan: inform and inspire. The best method for informing and inspiring others is through telling a compelling story. A well-told story captures our attention and sparks our imagination. It typically has a beginning, middle, and end. Think of your favorite movie as an example. It most likely pulled you into the story by creating curiosity, then unfolded into a problem that had to be resolved, and ended with a resolution. The most popular TED talks (and there are thousands of them), similarly use engaging storytelling techniques to transmit their ideas into the minds of their listeners. Your TED talk will be a means of helping you to further explore and communicate the most important parts of your story. In doing so, it is hoped that you will also gain greater clarity on your life direction or calling.
In this journal entry, you will explore some of these time-tested storytelling techniques that you can use in your TED talk. You will be looking at these techniques through the lens of your personal story; the narrative of your life thus far, and what you want to become. That, of course, includes your personality but can also reflect important life events, relationships, aspirations you have for the future, etc. Use this journal entry to brainstorm what you might like to communicate in your TED talk that could both inform and inspire those who will hear it.
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
· Reflect on principles of storytelling as it relates to the TED talk that will be presented in the final capstone course.
