ICD-10-PCS defines “approach” as the technique used to reach the site of the procedure. It is important to know the difference between the different approaches in order to correctly assign the fifth character value in the Medical and Surgical section. There are (7) approaches utilized within the Medical and Surgical section; open, percutaneous, percutaneous endoscopic, via natural or artificial opening, via natural or artificial opening endoscopic, via natural or artificial opening with percutaneous endoscopic assistance and/or external.
